For us here in the maritimes, we spend half the year in winter type temperatures, waiting for the 6 months of imitation summer. Nevertheless, that doesn’t stop many maritimers and visitors to the region from using the various waterways throughout Atlantic Canada
Boat Shows and Festivals
Several boating festivals come around to different parts of the maritimes. Some come every year like the PEI dragon boat race, while others come every few years like the Halifax Tall Ships. Outside of simply watching everyone else have fun, there are also multiple boat expos that come around, offering you a hands on chance to see the latest equipment.
A well known Maritime Classic Boat Festival, located the small town of Mahone Bay where the harbor is filled with a wide variety of boats, thousands of people to enjoy the festival and all the events it has to offer. The festival is known for and recognized by thousands, locally in the Maritimes and from away, for inviting and encouraging participation in the planning of the festival, which happens in February to allow plenty of planning time, for this amazing boat festival in the Maritimes. There are als Pirates which are part of this boat festival in Mahone Bay. They add to the unique character of the show with local historical facts to share, throughout the festival.
Boat Building
One upon a time, most of the world’s boat building happend at Canada’s Maritime ports and basins. For example, the Bedford basin provided a wonderfully protected area for building ships during world war 1. However, times have changed, and lots of the harbors and villages that once produce many of the worlds ships have, slowed production, changed their services, or disappeared.
However, you can still find boat building and training going on throughout the maritimes. Specifically, you can still get both of these in Lunenburg, NS, and Saint John, NB. However, most recently, with the Ships Start Here campaign in Halifax, the Irvin Shipyard in the Halifax Harbor, will probably be the biggest ship building operation in the Maritimes for years to come.
Marine Tours
Depending on which part of the maritimes you are, the type of tour you would be interested in would changes. In iceberg alley for instance, you would probably want to launch off on one of the local fishing boats in St. John’s Newfoundland on one of they tours
Others may prefer tours with more scenery. In Pei on the Harbor Hippo, or in Halifax on the Harbor Hopper, you can ride on one of the amphibious machines. They take you into the local harbors as well as through the downtown streets giving you a total understanding of transit in that area.
Fishing in Atlantic Canada
The Atlantic Region of canada is known for its fish and lobster. There is a strong fishing culture here with fishing villages dotting the entire east coast shoreline. Entire communities like Barrington, NS still rely heavily on the fishing season and industry
Note that with all of the fishing boats around, Canada spend a lot of time protecting this right. The local Department of Fisheries, enforces license and limit regulations. Depending on where you are in the Maritimes, be sure to check for any by laws. Ultimately, children under 16 can fish more or less freely with small exceptions. People over 16 need a licence, and will need to abide by, season dates, bag limits, size limits, in Fresh and Salt water. Cruise Ships and Tourists
You can see cruise ships on the horizon of various Maritime Shipping Lanes. Although most tourist come through the Port of Montreal, many also come through the Port of Halifax, and the Port of Saint Johns. With years of dredging, some of the biggest cruise ships in the world enter our waterways.
Collectively, these ships bring millions of visitors to the maritimes every year. Each province has a strong tourism focus and attractions. Most of these ships come during the summer months when the local restaurants open up their patio areas and invite users in to enjoy the Fresh Catch.
Lakes, rivers, and Coves
There are lots of local, rivers, lakes, and even waterfalls. Most of them flow directly into the atlantic. In New Brunswick, the St. John and the Miramichi rivers are the biggest around. However if you want to talk about big, you can’t leave out Quebec’s, over a million lakes and 4500 rivers.
Our rivers and lakes really cannot be missed if this is part of your interests. The untouched scenery will provide a notional geographic like experience. The streams team with life and often attack onlookers and scientists like the Atlantic Salmon in Eagle River, Labrador.

Wherever you are in the maritimes, you are close to water. With the majority of Canada’s east coast population living near to the water, boating is a big thing here.
